An Average Day

Our day starts at 0800 and we do a 12 hour shift. We check the bike and equipment at Kings Lynn Ambulance Station then leave about 0815 and ride into town. We initially go to the council offices and ‘check in’ with the CCTV control room staff make sure the radio link to them is working, we also have a mobile phone to our ambulance control room.

All incidents in and around Kings Lynn town centre come through on the phone as a text message so we can be mobile as soon as the phone bleeps, Ambulance Control can also phone us to give us additional information about the call if needed.

We can be mobilised to incidents in two ways either by the 999 system or if the CCTV operators see an incident in the town. If any of the shop security staff see a medical incident they can call CCTV on their radios and they will call us direct on the radio.

We have had several incidents in the town precinct now where we have been notified by CCTV control staff. We have arrived on scene on some occasions while the caller is still on the phone to ambulance control. Our average response time in the town centre precinct is about 3 minutes depending where the Cycle Response Unit is and where the incident is. We average about five jobs a day but have done up to eight, which matches the workload of an ambulance or rapid response car.

We can change our shifts a little to suit the workload, this might mean starting a little later in the morning to stay later in the evening in the summer, or late night shopping events near Christmas. We hope to cover special events at weekends such as the Kings Lynn Festival and The Great East Anglian Run.
