The Bike
The bike we use is a mountain bike made by Specialised. This make of bike is used by several ambulance and police services, and has proved to be strong and reliable with no major problems or component failures.
The bike is fitted with waterproof panniers in bright yellow and green colours with reflective markings to identify us as ambulance personnel, and for safety on the road and in the precinct. The bike is also fitted with blue flashing lights and a siren, and is classed as an official emergency vehicle under the road traffic act 2005 road vehicle lighting regulations.
The bike carries a puncture repair kit and small toolkit.
The Staff
We are all members of the East Of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust. We are all qualified Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians with between 5 and 23 years experience.
When we are not on the bike we go back to our normal duties on ambulances and response cars. This, and our annual continuing professional development courses we have to complete helps keep our practical skills and knowledge up to date, and helps us when we are working alone on the bike.
