London To Brighton...

Carl, Paul, Dean and Mark did the London to Brighton charity cycle ride in 2007 to raise money for the British Heart Foundation.

We attend patients on a daily basis who have suffered cardiac events. This was an ideal way to do some fund raising for a woth while charity. We did a total of 62 miles over the day. It was great fun waiting for Mark who struggled round on a £30 second hand mountain bike. My pedal fell off half way round and it cost me £35 to have new pedal fitted. I spend most of the day laughing at Mark's cheap bike, but I will have to admit he Mark had the last laugh watching me bike a mile with one pedal. My pedal cost more than Mark's bike!!!

Training and Development

The initial selection for the team took the form of an interview, clinical scenarios and a bike handling test. This was later followed by a bike fitness test which had a sprint and endurance component. We then attended the IPMBA Public Safety Cycling course in central London (see photos below). This excellent course is run by Ambulance and Police cyclists and based on an American system. We learnt about low speed bike handling, negotiating obstacles, riding safely in busy urban areas and the basics of maintenance.

Other topics included cycling nutrition, legal aspects and how best to pack and balance an EMS equipped bike. We are still constantly learning and improving our SOP’s and often seek advice from the Norwich CRU, with whom we are strongly linked.
